Wild camping
People have enjoyed wild camping on Jura for many years. In order to make this a happy experience for you and for the people who call Jura home please make sure you are following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (see guidance on wild camping quote below). Please also remember that, while we enjoy the right of responsible access to the countryside in Scotland, this right only extends to people and does not include the right of vehicle access. For your own safety you should also note the information about the deer stalking season below.
The Scottish Outdoor Access Code suggests responsible criteria be followed, and wording in that Code relating to wild camping is as follows:
“Access rights extend to wild camping. This type of camping is lightweight, done in small numbers and only for two or three nights in any one place. You can camp in this way wherever access rights apply but help avoid causing problem for local people and land managers by not camping in enclosed fields of crops or farm animals and keeping well away from buildings, roads or historic structures. If you wish to camp close to a house or building, seek the owner’s permission. Leave no trace by taking away all your litter. Remove all traces of your tent pitch and of any open fire (follow the guidance for lighting fires).”
Please be aware that Deer Stalking runs from July 1st to Feb 15th, during these months, for your own safety, you would be advised to contact in advance the relevant Estate concerned.

Also be aware of the provisions of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, although it is restricted to areas where access rights are exercisable and should be done responsibly.
Caravans, Motorhomes and Camper Vans
Jura’s single track roads are narrow, windy and, in many places places, in a poor state of repair. You would be advised to contact the Jura Ferry on 01496 840681 to ascertain whether your vehicle will clear the ferry ramp before travelling.
Passing places are used to allow people to pass you in both directions and is its essential that you are confident reversing your vehicle into small spaces, including in the dark with no streetlights if you are planning on driving at night.
There are currently no formal vehicle camping pitches or waste facilities on the island but there are public toilets in Craighouse and at Feolin ferry. Please do not park up in passing places and remember that our rights of responsible access to the countryside do not extend to vehicles.
